South Mecklenburg High School was established in 1959. The school has a rich history of academic excellence and leadership in Charlotte. Today, South Mecklenburg High has grown to become the largest high school in the state of North Carolina with approximately 3,000 students and 180 teachers preparing them for their future. We are a vibrant, multicultural campus that offers a comprehensive college preparatory course of study which includes a World Language Magnet Program, the IDEA Academy (Innovation, Design, Engineering and Art) and the Project Lead the Way curriculum in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering. In addition, we have programs to ensure the success of students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds including our Communities in Schools partnership and the Occupational Course of Studies. The student body is 46% White, 27% African American, and 27% Hispanic.
In order to ensure the ongoing success of these student programs, it is critical that we continue to retain and recruit the best teachers. Supporting our teachers is the driving force behind our Foundation. The primary mission of the foundation is to fund efforts aimed at promoting academic excellence, student success, teacher growth and improved job satisfaction. Funding includes support of classroom projects or supplies, professional development courses, and community building among teachers. An equally important mission of the Foundation is to serve our alumni as they look to connect with each other and to keep them informed about the ongoing accomplishments taking place at their alma mater.
Please register with us so that we can include you in future communications of the foundation and to inform you of class reunions and alumni events.
